The "Mary Sue" (or "Marty Stu") is a litarary trope for amature or fan fiction writing used when authors insert themselves into a story. Often, this representation is very idealized or is rediculously over-skilled.

We use it here as a shorthand to mean "put your child into the story." When the Mary Sue option is selected we insert the provided name (or names) into the story as main characters. All of the information we ask for is to do this so that your children can picture themselves as the main character. We're trying to take back the term and make it about bringing hope, wonder, and excitement to kids.

If the Mary Sue option isn't selected, we will make up everything that is left blank. The Mary Sue isn't available for young adult fiction that we create.
